Car recycling
In accordance with the producer responsibly legislation, the producer
(manufacturer or importer) of a motor vehicle is responsible for
organizing its end-of-life recycling. All Finnish importers of new motor
vehicles have taken care of their recycling responsibility through Finnish Car Recycling Ltd., which
is a producer association responsible for coordination of the collection, treatment
and recycling of end-of-life vehicles (ELVs) in accordance with the
requirements laid down in the ELV Directive.
The recycling system covers the take-back, deregistration, pre-treatment and shredding of end-of-life vehicles.
- Vehicle documents as well as the registration and identification data are verified at the take-back point.
- In pre-treatment, the end-of-life vehicle is removed of all fluids. Other parts to be removed include, for example, tyres, battery and catalytic converter. Explosive parts such as airbags are either removed or deactivated.
- Finally, the vehicles are shredded at large shredding facilities along with other scrap metal. Shredding is followed by sorting processes, in which reusable metals can be recovered nearly completely. Recovered metals are used to produce new products – for example, for the automotive industry.
Car recycling is easy for consumers. A consumer is entitled to deliver an end-of-life vehicle free of charge to any take-back point authorized by Finnish Car Recycling Ltd. There are almost 280 take-back points located around Finland. You can also order a free pick-up for the end-of-life vehicle.
